The Director of Hospital Medicine for University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC) is the accountable clinical leader for all hospital medicine programs across UMMC (excluding Masonic Children’s hospital and West Bank MHealth-Fairview hospitalists). Day-to-day responsibilities include: strategic planning for hospital medicine, clinical quality improvement, physician engagement, and system performance. This position represents hospital medicine physicians in pertinent internal and external meetings and coordinates with system and site administrative teams on related matters.
This position works closely with the MHealth-Fairview Senior Vice President Acute Care for Hospital Medicine, hospital Vice President Medical Affairs (VPMA), site hospital medicine medical directors, hospitalists and clinicians, advance practice providers, medical staff members, and other appropriate system partners to assure that systems and processes that support the patient / physician and clinical encounter and the overall patient experience are performing at a high level of proficiency. Additionally this position works with the Division Chief for General Internal Medicine, Associate Division Directors, and division administrators to support the academic mission of the hospitalists within the division.
Initial goals for this position include expansion of the program to include more clinical services, reduction of the need for moonlighting physicians, and improving quality improvement metrics.
Setting: The role of the hospitalist at UMMC has seen tremendous growth in the last 10 years and includes nearly 50 hospitalists who provide coverage 24 hours a day for patients admitted to UMMC. The hospitalist service includes inpatient care for all general medicine patients, some pediatric patients (for internal medicine/pediatric trained hospitalists), pulmonary patients, and hematology patients and will be expanding to provide care for oncology patients. Additionally the hospitalists run a Consult and Procedure Service include point of care ultrasound procedures at the bedside for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Hospitalist care is provided on both teaching services, including residents and students, and on non-teaching services. Many of the hospitalists also have formal teaching duties within the medical school, participate in quality improvement projects and conduct clinical research.
A new partnership in 2019 between the University of Minnesota and Fairview Health Services has created an expansive academic health system with growth opportunities for clinical, education and research across this joint clinical enterprise. UMMC, a quaternary care referral center for the region, is one of 12 hospitals within MHealth-Fairview providing care across much of Minnesota and into Wisconsin. This network provides care across the continuum including long-term care facilities and over 60 primary care clinics.
Collaborates with system leadership, hospital site leadership, service lines, domains and shared services leaders to provide leadership to quality initiatives, medical unit strategy, and operational plans including execution of hospital, domain, and service line strategies.
In collaboration with system hospitalist administrator and/or hospitalist operation support is accountable for:
hospitalist services meeting targets for clinical quality, patient satisfaction, employee engagement, financial performance, research and education.
day-to-day operations of system hospitalist programs to achieve performance targets/metrics including appropriate staffing.
maintaining community, medical group, and hospital standards/guidelines of medical practice.
In collaboration with the Division Director and Associate Division Directors, supports the academic mission by:
fostering excellence in teaching of students, residents, fellows and colleagues.
integrating research into clinical and educational activities.
Actively participates in recruitment, orientation, and retention to assure adequate staffing of hospital medicine services and to support the missions of research, education and clinical care.
Ensures site participation, reporting and resolution occurs consistent with peer review process.

Address opportunities to improve care system performance • Provide leadership, coaching, and serve as a role model for lean leadership utilizing principles and practices of the MHealth-Fairview Operating System.

Qualifications: • M.D. or equivalent degree with a sustained record of clinical and academic accomplishment and at least 5 years of experience as a physician leader in a reputable academic health system. • Show evidence of scholarship, mentorship, and consistent achievement in clinical, teaching, quality and/or research domains. • Eligible for a faculty appointment in the University of Minnesota Medical School at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Associate Professor or Full Professor preferred. Assistant Professors with exceptional skills will be considered. • Should hold or have the ability to obtain the appropriate medical license in the state of Minnesota as well as be board certified or board eligible. • Considerable progressively responsible experience in health care delivery and a track record of effecting change in hospital medicine. • Experience with strategic planning that has led to innovation and growth in hospital medicine. • Knowledge of change management and implementation to enhance outcomes in education, research and clinical care. • Knowledge of best practices in hospital medicine. • Experience creating a culture of collaboration to enhance patient and provider satisfaction.
